Tag/Memo: What It Is and Why You Can Lose Money Without It

100 60

When transferring certain cryptocurrencies such as XRP (Ripple), XLM (Stellar), TON (The Open Network) and others, you must always inсlude a special tag (memo). This is not a whim of exchangers — it is a technical necessity.

Why is a tag needed?

Think of the wallet address as an apartment building number. The tag is the apartment number. Funds arrive at the shared address (the building), and the tag tells who exactly they are intended for. If you don’t inсlude the tag, the funds end up in the “common lobby” and get stuck. Recovering them can be difficult or sometimes impossible.

Which coins require a tag?

  • XRP (Ripple)
  • XLM (Stellar)
  • TON (The Open Network)
  • Some exchange deposit addresses (e.g., on Binance, Bybit)

What happens if you forget the tag?

The exchanger or exchange cannot identify your payment. The transaction will get stuck and require manual recovery — this can take anywhere from a few hours to several days. In the worst case (when sending to an address where there is no way to identify the recipient), the funds could be lost forever.

How to correctly provide the tag?

  • The order form on our website always has a “Tag / Memo” field.
  • Copy the value from the order.
  • Paste it into the corresponding field in your wallet or when transferring from an exchange. Do not enter the tag manually — it is very easy to make a mistake.
  • Before sending, double-check that the tag is entered and matches the one in the order.

What if you sent without a tag?

  • Do not create a new order — this will make the search more difficult.
  • Immediately contact the exchanger’s support (or the exchange you sent funds to). Provide the order number, the transfer amount, the sender’s address, and the transaction ID (txid).
  • Be prepared for the recovery process to take time. In most cases, the funds can be found, but this cannot be guaranteed.

Remember: It is better to spend an extra 30 seconds checking than to spend days waiting for your funds to be recovered. If in doubt, contact support before sending. The operator will guide you.
