Major Global Banks Prepare to Launch Their Own US Dollar Stablecoin

Major international banks and financial institutions continue to expand their presence in the digital asset market. A group of 21 financial institutions has announced plans to establish a joint company that will support the issuance of a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar.

The initiative includes Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, Wells Fargo, Santander, UBS, Fidelity Investments, MUFG Bank and other major financial institutions.

Launch planned for 2027

The new company is expected to be established in the second half of 2026, while the US dollar-denominated stablecoin is planned for launch in the first half of 2027.

The digital asset is expected to support a variety of financial use cases, including cross-border payments and digital asset settlement.

In the future, the participating institutions also plan to explore stablecoins denominated in other G7 currencies, with a euro-denominated stablecoin identified as a priority.

Banks increase their interest in blockchain

The initiative demonstrates how stablecoin technology is gradually expanding beyond the traditional cryptocurrency market. Major financial institutions are increasingly exploring blockchain infrastructure for payments, international transfers and settlement.

Today, the US dollar stablecoin market is largely represented by digital assets such as USDT and USDC. The emergence of bank-backed stablecoins could increase competition and accelerate the integration of digital assets into the traditional financial systеm.

What could this mean for the cryptocurrency market?

The participation of some of the world’s largest financial institutions in stablecoin projects highlights growing institutional interest in digital assets.

Stablecoins are becoming an important connection between traditional finance and the blockchain industry. Over the coming years, competition between existing crypto-native stablecoins and digital assets issued by major financial institutions could increase significantly.
